On Sunday, 30 June 2024, the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH) launched the ‘Capacity Building Programme on Improving Management Effectiveness of World Heritage Properties in the Arab States Region’. The programme began with its first workshop, attended by several professionals working in World Heritage site management from various Arab countries, as well as experts and representatives from international organizations.

This programme is a collaboration between ARC-WH and the World Heritage Leadership Programme, which is a partnership between ICCROM and IUCN, supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment. The programme aims to equip the teams managing Arab World Heritage sites with the necessary skills and knowledge to monitor the condition of these sites and assess the effectiveness of their management, ultimately leading to improved conservation efforts for future generations.

The workshop is taking place for five days and includes intensive presentations, discussions, and group work sessions covering various topics related to improving World Heritage sites management according to the highest global standards.

The programme will continue until November and will consist of three phases, including meetings, workshops, and seminars held both in person and online. It is hoped that this programme will enhance the protection, conservation, and management of World Heritage sites in the Arab region, empowering Arab experts with tools to assess the effectiveness of site supervision and improve management processes, outcomes, and plans.

The Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage was established in 2012 based on an agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a Category 2 Centre under the auspices of the organization. It is the only one of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region. Currently, the Arab region has 93 sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, which include cultural, natural, and mixed sites out of a total of 1,199 sites listed worldwide.
