The Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH), in cooperation with the UNESCO Office for Egypt and Sudan and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is organising a specialized workshop titled “Capacity Building on the Preparation of Nomination Dossiers for Natural and Mixed World Heritage Sites in the Republic of Sudan”. The workshop took place in Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt from 6 to 9 October 2024, with the participation of more than 20 Sudanese experts working in the management and protection of natural heritage sites, representing both the public and private sectors.
The aim of the workshop is to enhance the capacities of Sudanese professionals in the field of World Heritage and the management of natural heritage sites and protected areas. The workshop comes in response to Sudan’s request for technical support to strengthen national expertise in preparing nomination dossiers for World Heritage sites.
This workshop represents an important step in the efforts of ARC-WH to protect and manage Sudan’s natural heritage sites by fostering a deeper understanding of World Heritage concepts and providing the necessary technical support for preparing nomination dossiers in accordance with approved international standards.
The workshop was led by two experts in natural heritage in the Arab region, Mr. Tarek Abulhawa and Ms. Nadine Seleem, both of whom have extensive experience in natural heritage in line with UNESCO and IUCN standards.
The training program covered several key topics, including the World Heritage Convention and the details of the nomination process, an introduction to tentative lists, the timeline for the process, and the required procedures. Additionally, the workshop highlighted the various components of nomination dossiers. Other important topics, such as the ways and importance of involving the local community in the nomination process and their role in protecting and managing heritage sites, were also discussed. The workshop included group discussions and interactive sessions aimed at exchanging experiences and knowledge among participants, as well as the review of specific case studies from natural heritage sites in Sudan to analyze them and benefit from the experiences of preparing, nominating, and managing them.
